FAQ’s

What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?
The main difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery comes in the motivation behind conducting either treatment.

As such, the most fundamental difference between the two comes from the following points:

  • Cosmetic surgery is conducted with the intention of altering and making an improvement to a person’s appearance, for the benefit of their confidence and self esteem.
  • Reconstructive surgery is normally conducted on features of the body which have been subjected to trauma, disfigurement or injury. Reconstructive surgery aims to reinstate function, appearance and sensation, where possible to areas of the body that have been affected.

How do I find out who the best doctor is to perform my plastic surgery?
Those surgeons who have been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery are doctors who are a part of the only recognized group within the American Board of Medical Specialties to carry out plastic surgery. By ensuring that your chosen surgeon is a board certified plastic surgeon, you can feel assured that you are in receipt of the highest level of care and expertise for your treatment. Dr. Medling’s Certifications and affiliations include:

  • Board Certified-American Board of Plastic Surgery
  • Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
  • MMC & SC Affiliation: August 2007
  • Active Staff—Middle Tennessee Medical Center
  • Active/Credentialed Staff—Middle Tennessee Ambulatory Surgery Center

What is the difference between a physician and a plastic surgeon?
In order for a physician to extend their training into the realms of plastic surgery, they must first undergo a prolonged period of training and assessment. To become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery a physician must complete a further, specialized post-graduate training course of between five and seven years, the final two years of which must be conducted at an approved plastic surgery training center.

Will surgery leave me with scarring?
It is normal for some scarring to occur after any type of cosmetic surgery, however, the nature and degree of severity in the scarring can vary greatly between procedures and individual patients. Plastic surgery is carried out in a way that attempts to minimise any visible signs of scarring, however, it is important to be aware of the potential for scars to develop. Where possible, incision lines will be made within the natural creases of the skin, in order to minimise the obvious appearance and detection of any scarring. We will always discuss these issues with you before any treatment is undertaken, so that you can be assured of the best results and be fully informed before making the decision to undergo surgery.
